The CDIA is pleased to introduce the Best Employers for Income Protection program.
This new initiative recognizes and honors employers who provide income protection coverage for their employees. It highlights employers nominated by CDIA member companies that offer strong disability income benefits that meet the following standards.
Many working Americans are unprepared for a loss of income due to illness or injury. Income protection benefits can make a life-changing difference for an employee during a challenging time. This program shines a spotlight on employers who support their employees this way.
Eligibility Criteria
- Short-Term Disability (STD): Replaces at least 50% of income, with elimination periods of 14 days or less, and with coverage for a minimum of 6 months.
- Long-Term Disability (LTD): Replaces at least 50% of income and provides coverage until expected Social Security retirement eligibility.
- Plan Structure: Can be employer-paid or voluntary. (Voluntary plans can be especially valuable as they offer affordable group rates and federally tax-free benefits).
- Funding Options: Employers may offer their benefits fully or partially employer-paid, or on a self-insured basis.
- Carrier Standards: Plans must be sponsored through insurance carriers rated A or higher by AM Best.
Process for Nominations
CDIA member companies can provide the checklist to employers they insure and assist with the nomination process. The nomination/checklist form must be sent to the CDIA, which, if approved, will issue a certificate to the CDIA member firm to give to the employer. The CDIA will also offer public relations language and support to help communicate this milestone.
Note: Only CDIA member companies may nominate employers for this recognition.
Annual Review & Designation
Each fall, CDIA will verify that designated employers continue meeting these criteria. Official recognition will be awarded in January for the upcoming year.
A Public-Private Partnership for Financial Security
Protecting workers from income loss due to disability not only strengthens our workforce but also reduces the burden on public assistance programs. CDIA will collaborate with public sector entities to raise awareness of the Best Employers for Income Protection designation and promote its nationwide adoption.
